e ' Mashpee Middle School Council Minutes May 1995 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.. 1.The upcoming schedule and agenda for visits of the High School principal finalist candidates was discussed. 2. Main topic of discussion was the School Improvement Plan and various goals within that plan, R' including what was achieved this past year and what remains to be done: GOAL 1: Review, evaluate, and design the Student Handbook. This was achieved this past year. Further revisions will be needed as the School Reorganization Plan takes effect. Arrangements were discussed for the drafting of those necessary revisions. It was mentioned that there will be three School Councils next year: one at the Coombs Elem. School, one at the elementary level at the Middle School, and a council for the grades 7-8 at the Middle School. GOAL 2: To integrate student support programs within regular education classrooms: a There is still work to be done toward meeting some obectives and tasks within this category; a perfect solution to various issues has not yet been reached. In trying to achieve the goal of earlier development of class lists, there are difficulties in identifying which students have I.E.P.'s (Individual Educational Plans), and therefore how they will be distributed among various classes. The practice is now for teachers to read and initial individual folders in the guidance office. Law prohibits generating any lists of students with I.E.P.'s. This goal will require further efforts in the upcoming year. GOAL 3: To improve communication to heighten community understanding, involvement, support, and pride in our school: PROPOSED: a. To identify a contact person at the Senior Citizen Center to act as a liaison with the schools and through whom invitations and calendars of events can be sent. b. Presidents of student groups should send personal invitations before events. c. Increase visitations by grade level to senior center to share creative writing. d. Continue to use the cable channel to broadcast school programs and performances. e. Encourage more parent participation and sharing of concerns at open forum portion of . school council meetings. f. Send copies of our minutes to chair of P.T.O. in.order to co-ordinate goals. g. A good idea for next year: Hold a council introductory/welcoming session prior to the October open house. h. Mail monthly calendars to chairs of Finance Committee and Selectmen. i. Invite town officials to come to school and discuss the responsibilities of their office with various student groups. j. Improve communication and education of School Committee and School Council in working through the budget process. The School Council should be informed as to how the School Committee develops the budget; and it would be beneficial to have a School Committee member sit in on the Council's advisory process, too. This has been done informally in the past year. i�
