PLANNING BOARD
Town of Mashpee
5
Planning Board Minutes ,._ January 18, 1984
Earle Marsters Under 10-3.2, overhanging signs, there were changes
rade at the last meeting, to signs shall be permitted which overhang
public ways , however, this provision shall not apply to .street signs
nor to signs erected by the town, county or Commonwealth forh control
of traffic nor shall this provision apply t signs permitted tte der 10.3. 4.
Skgns overhanging a public way are not allowed except by public agencies .
Under 10.3. 3 there can be no signs on trees -- comments (none) .
Under 10- 3. 4 no private signs on town property ,Aunless a permit is issued
by the Board of Selectmen.
Richardson Jonas: This points out why there should be bonding. If the
Selectmen grant someone permission to have a sign on a public way and
the sign falls on someone or on a car~ there is res-ponsibilitY there,
Earles liars tens : If a sign falls down it would be the responsibility
of the person who hung the sign, We Will check with town counsel on this,
Paul If the town grants someone permit for sign on town property,
whose ithe liabilit y
y. I don t think the town should allow private signs
on town property,
earle.::Marsters: Under 10. . 1 it mentions liability insurance, It must
be Filed with the Selectmen and that is where it is covered, Under 10.3.5
there where some changes. We added here, portable signs and these are now
prohibited here. Added was, "installed on any portable vehicle" . We are
tallying here of a portable sign, not the vehicle, This would not affect
signs painted on trucks but would affect signs mounted on trucks. A portable
vehicle would be a trailer. This would refer to a portable sign and not
one permanently attached, 10.3.6 refers to signs outside like coca-cola
signs at gas stations.
Gentlemen in audience: Why does this make reference to 'national products"
There are international products and this is saying basically that no
outside sign is allowed in the town period. This should say independent
products only.
Earle Mars t : Why not ,just say independent stand signs. This also comes
under portable signs.
RichardsonJonas Would this prevent someone from putting up a free-standing
real estate sign?
Earle Marte : This would only affect signs advertising products, We are
trying to get smaller, more tasteful signs.
tentleman in audience: Is it fair to make someone tape down a sign that
as been hanging there for a long time.?
( continued n gge 6)
