PLANNING BOARD
Town of Mashpee
PLA"ING BOARD MINUTES : -w25-wCont'Id. Page
Ir. Sweeney felt they were putting strict grounds on land owners who
had dust gone through a zoning change and they were again being limited
as to how they could use the land, He foresaw vast law suits against
the town.
Mr. Pratt felt there was much land available with better quality water
and thus consideration shouldn't be given to protect this particular
area, He agreed with what Mr. Buckingham had said that there were by
laws like this in other towns but the other towns were protection
proven source of water. He Felt this district put the cant before the
horse as they're creating problems without protecting anything.
Mr. Pratt went on to say that Rte , 28 rums right through the discharge
area which increases the li lihodd of accidents through it. He also
said the t ri-c l pay $200,000 for a piece , put a well in and lay
pipes for the price it world cost to treat this water, He said he
supported the idea of a district but didn't thin this particular
district is in the best interest of the Town.
Arlene Wilson felt there were other areas in town that would provide
good water qu nity and water quality and you would be able to get grants
o protect it. She :_f 'lt with the present water quality you wold be
ineligible for grants. She lt there would be real problems with
restrictions in the district and the developers could win law suits
since the water wasn't good to begin with. Also the possibility of
accidents in that area still exists , She Felt the town should First
loop at water supplies which are now actually serving the public no
matter who owns them. She urged that this particular district not be
adopted, but come back at the next town meeting and start to protect
existing supply wells to produce better quality water.
John Malone asked if they did create this district, could they undistr ict
same as was created when they do find better water.
Mr' . Marsters said he would assume it coup be rescinded., But he felt
it didn't sound like a very solid case and is somewhat severe , He said
he would rather see them protecting the existing water such. as Highwood.
Sera Rollins said she couldn't see why they should protect something
you know in the near future you're not going to use . She why not look
for something you can use and not spend this kind of money on this
district,
Mr. Marsters said it's sometimes dome because it's necessary but they
would have a tough time saying this is necessary and felt there could
be suits as they don't have a strong enough case to protect it.
Vernon Thomas said who's to say that engineers can't take the manganese
out from this water at some future date
