Conservation Commission
November 30, 1989
Page 1 .
8:30 Anthony Pelusi (Benchmark Surveying to build and maintain a pier in Msh pee
Pond at Lot 4 Melissa Ave. Wayne Tavares and Larry Hall of Benchmark presenting
with Mr. Pe 1 u i . A plan o f reveget tion was reviewed. Four trees Mr. Pe l u s i
inadvertently cut down were addressed. This is an older lot with existing railroad
tie steps down to the pond. He is looking to remove the deck and replace with a
larger deck, to code, and to construct a dock. There is an existing small dock
with a solid surface. There are stairs corning down. It is proposed to have an
entry deck with stairs coming down with a post and beam system leading to another
deck then further steps and a ramp leading to' the dock, 32 ft. long in total ,
4 ft. wide. All the work is to be done by hard as the site is too steep for
machinery. There is no disturbance except for the installation of 4 X 4 posts
for the steps. The revegetation plans shows 10-12 ft. Tupelo trees to replace
the four removed.
Mrs. Simmons pointed out that with the removal of the trees, shading of the pond
was lost.
Ms Behrman asked the dimension of the existing platform and was told 9 X 11 . She
pointed out they were going up almost four times in coverage of the area.
1r. Tavares stated it is being done properly with the proper spacing between boards
and type of planking.
Mr, Coffey questioned the vegetation in the area now. her. Tavares stated it is
indigenous, Sweet Pepper Bush, Wild Iris in the water, low Bush Blueberries,
I bernurn on the upper part of the slope which grew under the canopy of those trees.
1r. Burns asked the elevation from the upland side and was told 3. . Off the
water edge is more; under the deck it is 60.5 to the top, the elevation at the
water is 50-55.
Ms Beh rma n asked, from the ground level , what is the area, the plethora that's
supposed to be flourishing; are they flourishing in 1-1/2 ft. or 5 ft, headroom?
Mr. Tavares stated it varies, at the water level it is 55 ft. , as is shown the
contours raise 55 to 58; the ground is raising out of the water.
Mr. Burns stated there is something down there right now which the water is
splashing against, the concrete.
Ir. Tavares advised a concrete pad exists in the water to be removed.
Mr. Burns asked the elevation from the sandy beach up to the 38 ft.
Mr. Tavares stated from the concrete structure at water's edge it will be 5-1/2 ft, ;
it is 58 at the highest point.
Nor. Coffey questioned the purpose of the deck and was told it was to sit and enjoy
the view of the pond.
Js. Simmons asked if it could be smaller as it is a lot of coverage.
MS Behrrnan questioned the need for the steps to the beach with the dock there.
Mr. Tavares stated they were to prevent jumping off and to concentrate egress
from the deck in one area.
Mrs. Simmons concern, other than size of the top deck, was the position of the
other deck. She suggested the stairs be made longer and it be brought back
