Regarding the naming of the book, Chairman Cahalane noted that the grant was received for a technical <br /> purpose and acquired as a water management guide. Ms. Kane stated that Ms. Mason recommended that <br /> the book be titled "Town of Mashpee Citizens Guide" and the Chair confirmed it must then be the <br /> required name based on the grant. <br /> Regarding distribution, it was noted that the book be mailed during the summer when most Mashpee <br /> residents would be at their homes. Mr. Theis questioned whether the schools would receive copies and <br /> Ms. Kane responded that copies would be provided to the schools, the library and Town Hall. The postal <br /> patron mailing will allow for every resident with a postal address to receive a copy of the book. Ms. Kane <br /> agreed that it would be important to ensure that the schools receive copies so that teachers can use it as a <br /> resource. Mr. Theis added that the resource could be tied into their curriculum schedules. Chairman <br /> Cahalane thanked Ms. Kane for all of her efforts. <br /> Ms. Mason joined the meeting and was provided with the drafts of the book. It was determined that <br /> changes to the draft would be forwarded to Ms. Mason and Ms. Kane would make changes as necessary. <br /> NEW BUSINESS <br /> CORRESPONDENCE <br /> None at this time <br /> OLD BUSINESS <br /> Action Items <br /> Santuit Pond and Santuit Pond Grant <br /> The Chair announced that the grant has been turned down and inquired whether there were additional <br /> ideas to fund the $300,000 project. It was expected that the Friends of Santuit Pond would be present to <br /> share additional ideas. <br /> Mr. Baker referenced the alum treatment of Long Pond in Harwich and Brewster which was funded by a <br /> significant grant and recommended identifying the source of the grant. Towns contributed $10,000 and <br /> the Cape Cod Commission contributed $10,000 and remaining funds were supplied by a state agency. <br /> Mr. Theis recommended contacting new Congressmen for their assistance. <br /> In the meantime, Mr. Baker recommended reviewing the other elements that could be addressed besides <br /> sediment regeneration. The Chair reported that he was still awaiting a list from DPW Director Catherine <br /> Laurent that would identify roads with major runoff issues. <br /> Mr. York referenced a 319 grant which would require a match. Chairman Cahalane indicated that the <br /> Town is considering bonding and wandered if the project should be part of bonding discussions. The <br /> Chair indicated that it would be difficult to get money from the Town for this purpose. Chairman <br /> Cahalane stated that, in conversation with individuals at the State House, it was noted that grants tend to <br /> be awarded for projects that will permanently fix the problem. <br /> Mr. Baker and Mr. York summarized the choice of solar circulators and the pursuit of the grant to Mr. <br /> Petersen. Other alternatives were also discussed. Mr. Baker stated that the Friends of Santuit Pond did <br /> not support an alum treatment, which is also expensive and would require monitoring and Mr. York added <br /> that it could cause fish kills. Mr. Theis indicated that there was never discussion regarding bio- <br /> remediation and Mr. York referenced the possibility of algae harvesting. <br /> 2 <br />
