Mawhpee Public Library
P o Box 657
Mahpee MA
Circulation in November was 9,,009 items, compared with last year's
circulation of 8,592.' Year-to-date circulation was 55,870, compared t
55,593 items circulated last year.
The library is open until :00 PSI on Thursdays. I would like to adjust the
hours on Neter Year's Eve and close at :00 PM. Staff scheduled for the
evening would make the hours up earlier in the day or at another time
during the week.
i
On the financial front, I have no good news since our last meeting. Jan
and I attended the budget meeting. with Joyce Mason and Terrie cook.
The meeting was cordial but the message was grim. All departments are
working with the reduction budget. The town is still taring to make up
significant shortfall of $1.8 million, so all departments are sharing the
' burden.
s
The previous evening, the Planning and construction-Committee discussed
the Friends{ request to return the $75,,000 gift slated for the photovoltaic
panels. The Friends felt it would be a win/win situation they could redirect
their gift towards temporary staffing if the ton was grilling to return the
money and pay -for the photovoltaic panels out of construction funds.
i
After a hearted discussion, the committee voted five to one not to return
the money to the Friends. Steve cook made a motion to reconsider the
request if the torn ended up getting any additional LEER money from the
state. Additional funding was mentioned as a possibility tiro years ago
F when Steve and I attended the LEER workshop in Lakeville. It was
dependent on hoer many libraries participated in the program and if funds
were left over. Whether that is still on the table given the state's financial
climate is unknown. The committee voted four to two not to reconsider
the matter for any reason. The subject of the Friends helping to pay for
temporary help is still a possibility but that source of funding is off the
table and they would have to find another source of funding.
The staff and I have ruined feeling of excitement and trepidation about
the library opening. I had a meeting with staff to discuss the schedule of
moving and opening the new building. As it stands, we will be moving into
the new library sometime in March, as our lease is up March 31st and
Buflree Builders will be finished early in February. The balance of
February and into March will be taken up with furnishing, installing
