Mashpee Public Library
January 10, 2011
Director's Report
Circulation figures for the month of December are not yet available from the CLAMS system,.
Historically, December is a quiet month circulation via the CLAMS system., and numbers often
decrease as much as 2 OZo for the month. A qui&deck of the current fiscal year to date figures
shows that at the end of November 2011, our total circulation at 77;626. 'his-represents a
decline from 83,343 items, which was the cumulative total in November 20 10. The slight
decline in circulation of traditional materials continues to represent a system wide trend, and is
not specific to IMl shpee. On-the flip side, the circulation of eBooks has doubled since last fiscal
year, 8,'780 titles were checked out in D ec 201 L, compared to 3,623 'n Dec. 2.0 10. B ook
statistics'are not yet integrated into the monthly circulation reports generated by CLAMS. In the.
future, the statistics surrounding the use of Book is definitely something to factor.into our
service benchmarks.
The process for developing an e o k collection was the topic of much discussion at the CLAMS
Director's meeting in December. The e ook market is in a.period of transition as many
publishers are trying to determine hove to make eBooks available to the general public. A
number of publishers are not willing to allow libraries to purchase and circulate eBooks through
a lending model. Instead-they want to capitalize on the growing use of digital devices and only
offer their materials for purchase. A9reat deal has been v itten in the mainstream m press in the
last month, and many see libraries caught in the middle of a battle between the publishers and
booksellers such as Amazon and Baines and Moble.
At the December 14 meeting, the CLAMS Directors were asked to thin about how we might
approach collection development in the future; as it appears that individual libraries may b
called upon to buy their own copies of each title, as they currently do for hardcover boobs.
Presently, the CLAMS system is buying on a collaborative basis and maintaining a shared
collection with only one or two copies of each eook. I am serving as a member of the CLAMS
Digital Resources Committee and we will be,meeting January 24 to begin the process of
determining how the Consortium should move forward in this service area. The Library staff and
some of our tech savvy volunteers will be holding a drop-in help session for patrons with eBook
devices on January 19 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the went Room. Currently, the Library ovens one
Nook Bader. since the Amazon Kindle has recently become mp tible with the erdrive
system of lending, I believe vire need to also purchase at-least one Kindle to have for staff
demonstrations. I am planning to do some research, but I believe I will end up purchasing a
second look and two Amazon Kindles, we have also begun-to experience a demand for
eFader assistance and books in the Children's Room.
