I S
16 Greot Neck Road North
Mashpee, Massa chusetts 02649
Telephone - (508) 539-1438
MASUPEE MSTORICAL COMWSSION
Minutes ot'Meeting—June 22, 2017
The Mashpee Historical Commission meeting was called to order by Nancy Soderberg,
Chairman, at 8:40am.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Rosemary Burns Love, Michael Horne, Gordon Peters
and Nancy Soderberg.
Commissioners not Present: Brian Hyde, Joan Tavares-Avant.
First order of business was to welcome Michael Horne as a new Commissioner to the Mashpee
Historical Commission. His appointment had been approved by the Board of Selectmen on
June 1 9F 2017, for a 3-year term, and he has been sworn in at the Town Clerk's office.
Second order of business was to approve Minutes from our May 242 2017, meeting. Rosemary
made a motion to accept the Minutes, as amended, and that motion was seconded by Ava
Costello.
The Commission will continue to discuss the new pickleball courts, proposed for building where
the present Community Gardens are located on Route 130 in the Historic District. We, as a Commip>sion, acting in an advisory
capacity only, have not yet made a decision whether or not to approve.
Rosemary proposed that the Blanche Pocknett (Dean) platter, gift from Ann Early of Arkansas,
be put in the display out in the schoolhouse, along with a brief history of Blanche. She was one
of the students who was in the Class of 1901 —the last class that attended the South Mashpee
One-Room Schoolhouse, when it was located on Red Brook Road near her home. Blanche
went on to Tuskegee University in Tennessee and trained to become a nurse. She returned to
Mashpee and ran a Tea Shop at her home in South Mashpee. One of her hobbles she enjoyed
was painting. The Commission voted to support the motion.
Gordon made a motion to place a bronze plaque in the one-room schoolhouse to commemorate
Frank Lord's dedication and work for over ten years in the Schoolhouse.
