Admin. Mtg. 9/15/81
Page 4 .
Sel . Thomas asked if the Chief had determined his needs for the Annual
Town Meeting? Chief Gould stated that he is sure he will be running
out of money before the ATM, in the wag& account, because he has been
having to call men in to cover Meideros shift for several months now.
He would also like to ask for money for a new ambulance. If the New
Seabury station comes about, he would recommend a 2 bay station. He
would then need to add additional men, of 4 shifts , 2 men each. Sel.
Thomas reminded him he would need to get his articles for the ATM
in by February. Chief Gould stated that the ambulance would be his
number one requirement, and reviewed the problems of having just one.
Sel. Thomas asked, if you are appointed the permanent chief, what
could you give the department? Mr. Gould responded: Leadership; Direc-
tion; Training.
Chief Gould was asked if the salary as appropriated met with his
approval. He answered "It is O.K. right now. "
Chm. Garland related how Chief Gould goes to the Fire Station any
time there is a hint of any storm or problem whatsoever, which he feels
is commendatory. Sel. Thomas stated that she feels it is to be ex-
pected of any department head in this town, including the Executive
Secretary, to act in this manner. She feels that kind of thing is to
be expected of any professional in any position.
3) Regarding the withholding of money from the Mashpee Construction Co.
since payment of taxes is in arrears , the Selectmen felt no action was
necessary on their part. Chm. Garland asked what would happen if he
then refuses to provide gasoline to the Town. Sel. Thomas said that
would clearly be a breach of contract; the Executive Secretary concurred,
and said the Town would simply have to go elsewhere for gasoline.
4 ) Regarding the setting of a date for the fall Town Meeting, Sel. Thomas
asked where do we stand on finances? Mr. Murphy replied that the Town
Accountant is still working on FY81, and probably wont close that out
until Octob er. But we should get the tax bills out as soon as possible.
The viability of back-dating the tax bills was discussed, but no con-
clusion reached. Sel . Thomas said the Board should be very firm about
holding to the cut-off date they set for articles . The Selectmen felt
November 9 would be a good date for the meeting, with the warrant to
close on Oct. 2. Executive Secretary was instructed to request the
use of the school, notify the Board of Registrars and confirm the date
with the moderator.
5 ) The Selectmen felt it would be appropriate to appoint Edward Mara as
Assistant Wire Inspector, as per John Newton' s recommendation.
6) The Selectmen felt it was practical to stay with all afternoon Select-
men' s. Meetings , since there had been no requests to go back to an
evening meeting.
7 ) The Selectmen accepted the information from the Board of Assessors ,
acknowledgeing that they had made a mistake in their previous certifi-
cation of signatures on the Hooppole Road Petition.
OTHER MATTERS
(see next page)
