L
Page
I .
2 : 45 p.m. - n.ion Representatives - Fire Department Continued
Town Counsel; rw I believe it would be appropriate to listen and receive
any commentary, "
Chm. Thomas ; "Under the circumstances do you gentlemen grant to speak on the
subject?"
Hark Lopez; it Yes , we just have a few questions ,- and if they cannot be
answered at this time, I ' ll take it up at an other time or
at a proper time . ,r
Chm. Thomas; "Okay, does this mean you want to continue? "
i
Mark Lopez; "Yes. "
Sheldon Hamblin; The purpose df us being here is that lately there has
been discussion of the Lieutenants- from the Chief, the
situation was indicated by the Chief, and since there are
no provisions for Lieutenants , excuse me, there is no pro-
visions 'in the department for Lieutenants in the department
t this time, - and because. we understand we will be getting
a new Chief, them will be a lack. of continuity in how
this program- will be established a'nd with the input the
Board of Selectmen have to Department Heads , we would like
to know what you feel is going on as far as Lieutenants does .
Specifically, previously there was discussion on Lieutenant's
exams , an idea which I understand was to be an open exam,
this meant to invite outsiders . Firefighters from other
Towns . If this, was to take place, does that mean. that the
men in our -department who score highest in the exam and an
outsider did score -high, than that roan would be .appointed
as a Lieutenant The men low on the seniority .List would
lose their job-?"
Chin. Thomas ; "Excellent- question. "
se l . Garland; "Madame Chairman,, I will refrain from any comment and I will
divorce myself from' this proceeding. "
Town counsel; "I think, Madame Chairman, that the question that was asked,
while I certainly can understand the question that was asked,
and it is very reasonable and intelligent, but I would submit
that this .is a question that you should discuss with labor
counsel, who has been guiding your Board in these labor matters ,
I suggest that to you; not for the purpose of bind..evasive,
but I have a hunch that the Board might like to get into a
discussion,- but it would be inappropriate to do so. I think
the labor- attorney might be quite distressed if you did. "
Chm. Thomas; I think these gentlemen understand this fully. I think they
forgot than Lieutenant was mentioned, in the contract. "
ir. Lopez and lir. Hamblin; "Right, we dial.
mark Lope Will there be an other time we can discuss this outside of
