i i a
F
k
Board Of Selectmen Page Six
Regular Meeting
Wednesday, JanuarY 7P 1986
That's the kind of issue that I think you can only solve if you
say 'we're going to bite the bullet and create a d.strict' and then
everybody pays in proportion to their own. . .into the sytem, Now
what David said in connection with briiiging roads up to a certain
standard before that district was formed. . ,we ' d be happy to talk
about that. on the other hand , we can make a. case that we maintained
a disproportionately large number or miles of road, unilaterally; but
nevertheless , I 'd stall keep that open and say that we '-d be happy t
talk about that because we really do 'ant a. long-term s lution. Certainly
a, lot of time has been spent by not only the peninsula -Council among
thems1eves trying to "divvy" up the responsibility in this connection
and Popponesset Village and New Seabury. The amount of'time vire 'ire all
spent would pay for an' awful lot of fixing roads if we just translated
that time into dollars . I think that we 'd be willing to try to bend
over backwards to maybe do more than our share in that respect to get
a. long-term olutio :,
Mark Devereaux (Bright Coves 'I' o way beim looked
g
at at the present time , I would resent as a taxpayer paring tree taxes
for maintaining roads * I pay one for the Town of Mas pee I pad- one
to the Peninsula Council for any summer home and then, this would be a.
third one, why don' t we have , on an organized basis t have the Town take
over these roads t a. are in question, . *as a. long-term solution over a,
per'lod of time, This appears to me to be more fair than going the other
route were we still have complexities facing us. I think it' s best-
that
e tthat the Town, where we pay our taxes , take over the main roads where
the Town services are extended such as popponesset Island. I know we
don't have the money at this particular time but that would be the fi 'al
solution, in my estimation. '
Ernie Virgilio, Director of DPW: "We have worked very hard
developing a program to accomplish exactly what you r. Devereaux are
talking about. It would have been ready for this May Toy Meeting had
there not been so much objection to it. I had, intended on taking all
the main roads in what I call the "loop" area, which is wading Place ,
Shore Drive , Ro.c,k Landing, Summers.ea, Uncle Percy's Road. I needed two
years , two years a -o to prepare for right now and it was unacceptable to
manypeople" .
r. Hanson: 'II wanted to make a point that we have programs
in the works for this" . Mro Lawrence : "You have to understand that there
0
are plentyo people on these roads that -do not want tern taken'
Mr. oebeils ; "I would like to offer a possible su e tion
gg
now that the Selectmen have given us some Iapetus to go ahead and we
are mor6 aware that there is a very real concern about all of the roads
and perhaps three or Four of the roads in particularwe *perhaps we could
gather everybody together within the next week o to
weeks to iron out
the problem of the roads that are in the worst condition to see if we
can find solution to that problem and perhaps talk about the long-range
g ge
olution and cone back and report to the Selectmen of progress , We are
