F
i
I
for the oyster harvest project. There was discussion regarding work in Falmouth that would
consider the changes in eater column nitrogen due to oyster.aquaculture. Mr. York shared
slide depicting the Toe n's.plan to increase oyster propagation, with a greater increase in the
Tribe's farm operatin and a goal of removing 5 tons of nitrogen per year from the Mashpee
River and the Popponesset Bay system. Five million oysters would equal 2 ' tons of nitrogen in
the harvested oysters, but the full impact would be the denitrification of oyster beds. There was
discussion regarding numbers needed for DEP and the possibility of phasing in while gathering
accurate data. It was determined that the smaller, more conservative numbers would likely be
acceptable by DER Nor. Howes reminded the Commission that a plan was still needed. Mr.
Lombardo added that the shellfish project would be adaptive management and if it were not
successful, another option would be necessary. Mr. York noted that the shellfish currently in
place would count in the equation for the TNML that the MEP report had generated because it
was based on real data. Mr. York added that the 2011 quahog commercial west was 'A rnillion
pounds of quahogs, removing ' ton of nitrogen from the Bay and was already part of the
equation. It was suggested that the capacity could be 5-10 acres and was not an issue.
In Waquoit Bay, Mr. York expected work to be focused on Jehu and Hamblin Pond area with a
goal of seeding 30 million littlenecks per year because quahogs would be less of a risk and `
would only take two years to grow for harvest. To remove 6 tons of nitrogen, 3 million
littlenecks would be needed. 1&. York suggested the importance of the shellfish projects to
cleaning up the watersheds while the CWAV was being finalized. Mr. York would propose
seeding 10 million next year, increasing it each year. fir. York sued that the Seapuit River area
was hosting 22 acres of quahogs which would total at least 20 million and seed at approximately
75%.
Regarding quantification, Mr. York stated that Town and Tribe harvests were reported, creating
accurate data. Additionally, the state had a system whereby sold quahogs were scanned and
reported to DMS creating additional accurate data, down to the pound. Finally, continuous
monitoring would be a requirement,
Chairman Fud al a inquired about the destruction of salt marshes due to nitrogen and the Fluor
Island Study and whether ther it could potentially impact the models being used. Mr. Howes
discussed the study and described the differences between low and high tide and nitrate addition.
Status of GHD Taste
-GHQ Work-fir. Gregg will begin work on the next step of the plan, incorporating the shellfish
component.
-Regina villa Associates Public outreach Work-No cage. Mr, Gregg reported that traffic
to the website was minor sirs .e there had been no new information added to the website. The
draft of the MEI' report v ill be added to the site. Mr.-Howes requested that it be clearly labeled
as a drab and that it first be reviewed by the Sever Commission.
Voucher Signatures
-GHD Billing for$615.97-The July invoice was for Rema Villa and would be deducted from
the SRF funds.
