than was needed to meet community needs. This compromise in library space is showing
its mark today, as evident in the analysis of existing space versus estimated space needs,
The unprecedented growth of the community and the high demand for library services
will require expansion of the building within 5 gears.
Preliminary cost estimates prepared by Gaffney Architects found that, based upon the
Library's program statement of need, comparison with communities of similar size and
review of the original design and grant projections, a 5,000 square foot addition would be
both reasonable and realistic. They expect that 1996 construction costs can be achieved
within $110 per square foot. Total estimated costs are $660,200, which have been
proposed for FY 2001.
Projected Needs in 2004
Service requirements in the following areas are based on Town population projections;
the collection size, number of seats, staff work stations, and meeting facilities. other
space, which includes special use and nonassignable space, can be calculated by using
formulas determined by the State of Wisconsin Library Planning Guidelines. The total of
each of these figures will provide a target for the Mashpee library for 2004 and buildout.
The standard for number of volumes is based on population levels. In 2004, Mashpee's
weighted population is expected to range between 13,400 to 14,500. with 3.5 volumes
per capita (the standard for this population range), the library should have around 47,000
to 50,000 volumes. Using the base figure of 10 volumes per square foot, around 5,000
square feet of space would be needed to properly house these volumes. Although this
does not include periodicals or recordings, it provides a starting point for planning library
space needs. Periodical and recording information, along with other planned services,
should be included in the library expansion study.
Projected Volumes and collection Space for 2004
Population Standard Volumes Space for collections
2004 low weighted 13,394 3.5 46879 4,688 square feet
2004 high weighted 14,564 3.5 50974 5,097 square feet
State standards recommend 5 seats per 1000 population. Taking 2004 pro•ected weighted
r g
population, Mashpee s library should have around 70 seats. As mentioned earlier, state
regulations do not count seats for computers and microfilm machines in this calculation,
so additional seats would be needed for these services. Taking into account the 30 square
feet per seat standard, about 2,000 square feet of seating area would be neededin 2004.
Projected Seats and Seating Area for 2004
Number of Seats Square Footage for
Re wired Seating
2004 low weighted population 67
2 2,009
004 high weighted o ulation 73 2 135
There are currently 4 staff work stations in the
library, with the anticipated growth in
volumes and seating levels, an additional two workstations should ber vided b 2404•
po y
Applying the standard of 150 square feet per-workstation 900 be needed
for fibra staff. square feet will
library f f. The Head Librarian would also like to see about a 50% increase in
meeting room capacity by 2004. Meeting
rooms ace needs are calculated on a standard
of losquare feet per person, which creates the
need for a 1,130 square foot meeting room.
12
