Finally, it has been found that special use space usually comprises 7 to 10 percent of the
total area of a public library building, with the 10 percent figure being used for our
analysis.
Summary of Space Needs
for 2004 Pro'ected Population'
Space Use Estimated Space
Needs(sq ft)
i
3
Collection Space
48,927 volumes @ 10 vols. per sq. ft. 4,893
User Seating
70 seats @ 30 sq. ft. each 2,100
Staff Work Areas
6 staff workstation @ 159 sq ft per area 900
Meeting Room
To seat 113 people @ 10 sq. ft. per seat 1,130
Subtotal#1 91023
Special Use Space '
@ 10% of Subtotal#1 902
s
Subtotal#2 91925
Nonassignable Space
@ 25% of Subtotal#2 2,481
Gross Area Needed 12,406
Nonassignable space is defined as "those areas or rooms of the library necessaryfor the
general use and operation of the building but not service specific library functions, such as
foyers, vestibules, corridors (but not aisles in bookstacks or other furnishings, toilets,
janitor rooms or closets, ventilation ducts, and mechanical equipment areas." It is the
nonassignable space that separates the library's net square footage versus its gross square
footage, For estimating purposes, it can be assumed that from 20 to 30 percent of the
building will be classed as gross or nonassignable space. For this project a figure of 25
percent nonassignable space will be assumed.
As shown above, a 12,000 square foot facility would be needed to meet the needs of
Mashpee's population in 2004. This figure does not include space for recordings and
periodicals, but based on a study for a building of a similar size, about another 500 square
feet would be needed for storage and display of these materials. The information
p y
presented here can be used as base information for the Library Expansion Study.
Projected Needs in Buildout
The volumes per capita projected for buildout, 3.25, is lower than for 2004 due to
Mashpee's weighted population projected at around 20,000 people. Between 56,000 and
66,000 volumes would be expected for a library meeting the standard. The estimated
space to house these volumes would range from 5,600 to 5,600 square feet.
The number of seats and seating areas at buildout can be calculated by using the State
standard of 5 seats per 1000 population, as was done for 2004. Mashpee's library will
need between 90 and 100 seats to meet the standard, not including seats for special use.
Multiplying this amount b 30 square feet per seat creates the need for around 2,600 to
y q
3,000 square feet of seating area.
13
