Projected Needs in 2004
The following needs are related to the existing facility.
• The building is not fire protected. At this time only the file cabinets are fire protected,
A fire suppression system is needed.
• Removal and replacement of vinyl asbestos floor tile. The Historical Commission is
concerned about the condition of the floor. Currently, all the file cabinets are in the
corners of the budding because the Building Inspector was concerned that weight of
cabinets would damage the floor, possibly lead to it's collapse. Therefore, a new floor
will be needed.
• A series of items related to the proper storage and handling of historic materials: The
facility should be set a right temperature for the preservation of historic materials. In
order to maintain this ideal temperature, a climate control/HVAC system will need be
installed. Also place photos and other materials on acid paper.
• Replacement of windows.
• Upgrade of electrical system.
• Renovation of bathroom so as to conform with ADA standards.
• There is the need for a computer system (w/printer, scanner CD-ROM, software and
networking capabilities) at the Archives to collect and maintain databaseenealo ical
g g
records and other historical documents, and provide a link to state databases. Public
demand for information predicates this need. The large amount of historical data
requires database creation and maintenance. Networking capabilities would facilitate
the Archives' ability to serve as a resource for the Library, the schools and all those
interested in local history.
Those needs relating to expansion of the existing usable space the following must occur:
• The basement of the Archives must be fully renovated, including: New ceiling, walls
and flooring (new floor mentioned above) and provision for handicapped accessibility
(both in terms of general access and the renovation of the bathroom per ADA
standards).
As discussed in the inventory section, The Historic commission anticipates using the
basement could be used as meeting rooms and exhibit display la areas. In addition, the
basement could possibly house the computer system mentioned above.
Projected Needs in Buildout
• The Commission would like to move O ckwa Chapel apel which is on the cemetery lot,
near the Meetinghouse), onto Collins' Lot, to be used as an annex to the Archives. It is
anticipated that by buildout, the Archives Building would reach capacity for the
amount of records it can hold.
• Currently, day-to-day operations of the
P Archives are left to volunteers. For more
consistent and professional services, a full-timeP aid archivist should be considered.
Fiscal capabilities
It is highly unlikelythat property P p ort
y taxes can provide for the full range of needs for the
Archives Building. Organizations that may provide grants
include the local branchY P some dollars In the form of
of the Massachusetts council on the Arts & Humanities the New
England Historic Genealogical Society, New r
the New Y England Document Conservation Centerr
England Museum Association, the Massachusetts ' -ties Fund and
the Ba State Historical cultural Faclzties Fu
Y League.
