being the Avant House Renovation, which is key to the museum itself and Phase II, an
addition to the Museum.
Another important project currently in the discussion phase is the attempt to get the
Avant House on the Registry of Historic Places. The National Trust of Historic
Preservation has been contacted and a meeting between the Tribal Council, the Town's
Historic commission and the Trust is in the process of being set up. One prominent
historical feature of the budding is the extremely old root cellar. Whether or not this
building gets listed affects how future plans unfold. The Tribal Counsel would prefer the
building to stay the same if it can be repaired.
The following items are those the Museum needs as part of Phase I:
• The electrical system needs to be brought up to standards that provide the ability to
handle a climate-control system. A climate-controlled environment is critical to the
museum in order to preserve the integrity of those artifacts on display.
• Additional cases for the artifacts and skeletal remains.
Utility work, including an inspection of the water and sewer disposal systems.
• A new roof is needed.
• There are no gutters on the roof of this building. Currently precipitation splatters onto
the foundation. Possibilities include using gravel or installing gutters. Research may
indicate a type of gutter that would not change the aesthetic value of the building.
* The foundation of this structure needs to be restored. As discussed above, the sills and
joists both need to be replaced.
• The facility needs to be brought up to ADA standards. A handicap-accessible
bathroom is needed on first floor. Also needed is handicapped access to the back of
the building. If the Museum is designated a historic structure on the Registry, there is
the possibility for waivers to be granted for certain ADA requirements.
Projected Needs in 2004
It is anticipated that all Phase I work will be done over the course of the next few years.
Therefore, by 2004, Phase II workwill be needed,
At this time the following are a number of possibilities, which depend on the architect's
design and ghat is ultimately builtin Phase I:
• Phase II is to provide for additional displays ace. The need for a larger display area is
p g P Y
due to the number of artifacts that are not on display right now. Some of these items
include a Native American pipe and a medicine additi
. on, the bag In ' ' Tribal Council
has been in touch with people from all over the count who have artifacts that belong
g
to Mashpee, and are currently working on collecting these artifacts and returning
them back here.
Even people in Mashpee have some artifacts that
should be returned to this museum,
given the proper display area. Also the Town government has some artifacts collected
during the land court case time period, which should be returned.
• It is anticipated that this addition would have a climate-controls stem installed in
of the artifacts
order to preserve the integrityY
.
• Better Route 130 visibility, This can be
ac complzs he d by moving Avant House
forward, which depends on whether it becomes registered. se becomes a
g stered. If the Hou
registered property, it may not be moved, since moving' a historic building ildin rulns its
18
