i
A sprinkler system, costing $15,000, has been approved by Town Meetingfor the Senior
Recognizing
Center. gnizing the Senior center is being used near capacity, a Space Needs Study
has been proposed in FY 2000 with $15,000 the anticipated cost. The purpose of this
study is to hire an architect to see where should COA go in terms of future needs, P lans
y and programs.
One identified program not being offered is an Adult Social Day program.care ram. This
g
program would provide a place for seniors to go for the day, while their caretakers
(usually sons and/or daughters) are working/shopping. It is designed for people not ready
tog o into nursinghomes. I
Projected Needs in 2004
i
A bigger senior center will be needed by 2004. This facility operating is now o at or above a
g
capacity level in. a number of areas. Addition of proposed programs will require an
expanded facility. In addition, there is projected growth of about 300 year-round seniors
in Town by 2004 (as mentioned above the UMASS MISER projection is for seniors 65 and
older, while The council on Aging includes seniors 60 and older in planning for its
services. Projections for this age range are not available, however.). An expansion of
1,200 square feet would be needed to maintain the current level of service. Listed below
are those identified needs for 2004. Whether or not these needs take up more than 1,200 f
square feet will have to be addressed through the Space Needs Study set for FY 2000.
A larger meeting room is needed. As mentioned previously, there is heavy demand
for the Senior center as a meeting place. This situation may change somewhat with
the renovation of Town Hall and the opening of the high school.
f
f
Expansion of kitchen and replacement of equipment.
Senior center computer education room with four computers and printer.
Space is needed to provide an Adult Social Day Care program,
The Thrift shop building is coming at the end of its useful life. It would make sense as
part of any expansion project to have the Thrift Shop become part of the main
wilding.
Increase size of parking lot to provide additional parking spaces.
With an expansion needed to both the building and the parking lot, the
l
walking/fitness trail network behind this facility may need to be redesigned.
Projected Needs in Buildout j
Although no figure is available for the number of seniors at buildout for 2010 there are
estimated to be 1,640 seniors within the Townonce again as defined b
 g Y the UMASS
MISER study.). A 7,000 square foot facility would be needed to maintain the 1993 level of
service. The actual size of facility should be based on an updated space needs assessment
conducted around the time Mashpee approaches buildout. Analysis of the senior center
Parcel shows that there is enough room for expansion of the building, and parking as
needed, to the north. At the northern boundary, there do appear to be some wetlands,
Which would have to be taken into consideration if expansion moves closer to this area.
21
