Senior Venter(see Map 6)
Existing Facilities
The Senior Center, located at 500 Great Neck Road North, was originally built in 19'
This facility consisted of a ranch building with a high foundation, which allowed for t
levels. The size of the original building was 2,880 square feet. In 1993, a 2,090 square fj
expansion was added, which created the Director of the Council of Aging's office, i
Outreach coordinator's office, the clerical area and the great room. The facility has
conditioning and is on its own well. Hookup to the Mashpee Water District has be
funded for FY 1997.
This Town-owned parcel is 6.1 acres. Also on the property is the Thrift Center and
Fitness Trail. Opened in 1983, the Thrift Center is operated by the Friends of the Coun
of Aging. The fitness trail was developed with the assistance of the Wells Fargo Bar
The Senior Center parking lot can provide space for up to 47 vehicles, including E
handicapped spaces.
The basement is "rented" to the Elder Services of Cape Cod and Islands from gam
fpm, Monday through Friday (there is actually no charge to this organization). Eld
Services operates a small kitchen, which provides on-site meals & home delivery to ars
elderly residents. As mentioned above, the Thrift Center currently has a separa
building on this parcel. Also, a number of Town boards and other organizations use t]
great room for their meetings. The number of these meetings have increased with t]
renovation of Town Hall. completion of this renovation, coupled with the opening of t]
high school should take some pressure off the usage of this facility.
An identified level of service is 3 square feet per senior citizen, based on information fro
the National Council on Aging. This figure can be compared with the number of (y ea
round) seniors in Mashpee after the 1993 Senior Center expansion to analyze the level
service of our Senior Center. In addition, information on the programs and services ca
be used to identify the current operating level of each program/service (e.g., what is tf
operating level of the Meeting Room).
In 1990, there were 1,151 year-round senior residents, or about 14.6% of the Tows
according to the Massachusetts Institute for Social and Economic Research MISER at t
Mass. Comparing the number of year-round seniors to the e square footage provided b
the 1993 expansion of 4 90 s q g
P quare feet, gives a figure of 4.31 square feet per Beni(
citizen. Although this analysis shows the Senior Center operating with some excel
capacity, the MISER population P g
p p n figure includes seniors 65 and older. The Council o
Aging, however, includes seniors 60 and older in planning far it itioi
this figure does P g s services. In add
g not take into account the senior summer population.
Three areas currently exceed capacity: the great room
two programs g Parking lot and the kitchen. Ass
P g not being offered, an adult social da care program and a com ute
education room, would require y p g P
q more space than is currently available, The Senior Cente
is one of the most used Town owned meetingfacilities. 7
people, according The great room has a limit of
P g to Fire Department standards, Once the Town Hall is renovated ani
the High School is completed, the number of
meetings being held at the Sensor Lente
should decrease.
20
