MASHPEE WATERWAYS COMMISSION
March 25, 2019
Good Evening Madam Chairman and all;
I'm here to advise you on the status (or lack of same) on our Town Maintenance dredging
project for the Popponesset Approach Channel. As you know we contract every year to have
this Channel dredged to provide safe travel for boaters who use the Bay. The Channel
accommodates boaters from Barnstable, Cotuit, Mashpee and boaters who seek the pleasure
of our waters for Fishing, shelling, swimming, boarding and exploration of Mashpee offerings to
transient vessels.
We have two marinas that offer boat services—docks, repairs, restroom facilities, water, fuel or
tie up to enjoy their lunch but not on anchor. Each one is a unique experience.
The Town has entered into contract with our County dredge team back in mid-February.
Included in the contract is the pre dredge survey that was performed in mid-December. This
survey was performed early so as to provide the Town with a larger window of time to perform
the dredge and not encroach on an Avian TOY (time of year) Restriction effective April 1St
I met with the County Administrator Mr. Jack Yunits and provided him a set of drawings
showing the County Survey data, the dredge permit drawings that showed the Channel location
and the sand disposal area as laid out on Popponesset Spit, again a part of the Permit. I also
advised him that as required by our permit a copy of the Towns permit had to be with the
dredge project manager while he was doing a dredge in Mashpee. I had given that copy to
Wayne Jaedtke a few years back.
After review of drawings we went to familiarize Jack with the State Fisherman's Landing area of
the Spit at the end of Wading Place Road. From there we walked down and on to the Spit for a
better viewing of the Popponesset Creek area. We were able to point out the location of where
the dredge would park off hours or if some heavy weather were to show up. (Mother Nature
knows us well)
From there we went back to the Town Hall for further discussions with the Town Manager, Mr.
Collins, Assistant Town Manager Mr. Taylor and our Barnstable County Commission delegate
Mr. O'Hara. There we discussed Jacks trip to the area, the dredge project as a whole and
received assurances our project would be given full attention knowing the County Dredge had
to be completed by April 15t..Jack and I both felt it was a good visit for him.
