The lack of maintenance dredging would create a major boating
hazard, and many of the slip holders would be unable to navigate the channel. As a boatyard
owner, this would represent a huge reduction in staff and loss of revenue in the upcoming boating
season.
Steven Peters, 3 Sewell Drive indicated that it is disconcerting to site the proposed municipal
wastewater treatment facility in an area of approximately 200 homes. The surrounding
neighborhoods are comprised of blue collar workers literally a stone's throw away. Concerns were
expressed regarding the location of the WWTP Site 4 that would degrade the quality of life with
chemicals, odors and the loss of home values. Mr. Peters stated he is in support of the overall plan
and the need to clean the waters, but not in residential neighborhood areas.
Mike Oleksak, President of Save Popponesset Bay expressed apprehension regarding the annual
dredging. A channel filled with sand represents a safety hazard and poses risk for accidents. Mr.
Oleksak encouraged the Town to get the dredging done and offered to assist in procuring
agreements to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.
3
