The sign will be fabricated letters and will not be face, lit, but will have LED's
inside of the fabricated letters that will cast a glow on the building behind the letters.
Mr. Mendoza asked how many lumens will be produced by the LED's. Mr. Kwass said
typically the glow type design and it is not a substantial amount of lumens because it is just
a residual background on the building. Mr. Mendoza said he will need to have the number
as stated in the bylaw which is 100 lumens per square foot. Mr. Kwass said it is backlit
channel lettering and would be in that range. This is simply a glow around the letters. Mr.
Mendoza read the bylaw Section 174-52 (g) illuminated signs.
Mr, Kwass said when he spoke with the Planning Department, the illuminated sign was not
interpreted as light coming through the face of the sign. It is simply a cast glow upon the
building behind it. He said that there will be a white glow around the perimeter of the letters.
Mr. Mendoza polled the committee members for comments.
Miles said that the size of the sign was a little excessive for the size of the building. It should
not exceed 5% of the building frontage because there are multiple units in that building.
The measurement is for the.size of the entire building.
Mr. Kwass wanted to make sure he understood the bylaw. The total signage cannot exceed
10%of the wall. Miles said; it's the building front.
The owner of Planet Fitness moved the entrance from the rear of the building to the side
of the building, and is ADA compliant and a better flow for the business. He asked if that
new entrance is now considered the store front, or is it just the front of the building along
the road.
1
