Minutes of Meeting of
Design Review Committee
Held Tuesday, March 5, 2019
Mashpee Town Hall Waquoit Meeting Room
Mr. Furbush said the front of the building is along the road. That could be in their favor
because it's a large building. If he knew the actual square footage, he could figure the
percentage.
Mr. Cummings said the front wall area would be Rte. 28.
Miles wanted to determine the proportions of the sign in relationship to the windows, and
the pillars on either side. He said it seems quite wide and overlapping the vertical elements.
The sign seems to be intruding on that space, He thinks it should be scaled down a little
bit from an esthetic point of view. He wanted to make sure there would be no other lighting
other than the proposed backed white light LED's. Miles asked about the coloring. Mr.
Kwass said; that the letters would be painted the Planet Fitness color, and the gear is a
digital print that would be mounted and is mostly black other than the"PF" purple ring on
the top. It's the Planet Fitness Corporate Color.
Mr. Furbush asked if the franchise had the same colors.
Mr. Kwass provided a new plan that depicted a significant reduced signage size to 5% of
the frontage, and also had the new calculation.
Miles said the revised plan is much better and matches the proportions of the building.
The committee wanted the dimensions of the building.
Mr. Kwass discussed the Square Footage Key; he calculated the frontage of just the Planet
Fitness based on the lease line and building height, and took 5%to design the sign.
Jonathan said that because its a corporate sign, the color is fine, the size needs to be
reduced. He didn't have any other issues. He would like to see the actual building
dimensions.
Joe Cummings said that the new sign looks better and appears to meets the 5%, but he
would like to see the lighting.
Mr. Kwass said it is a very subtle glow like a silhouette.
Miles noticed that on the plan depicting the night view of the"PF"seems like a mottled flaw.
Mr. Mendoza thought that the "PF" does not need to be illuminated because it looks too
dark, and could not see the value if it cannot be seen at night. The size is a much better fit
with the windows. He suggested that the "Planet Fitness" illumination is fine, and not
illuminating the gear because it will not be noticed, The sign has been reduced 5%for the
area utilized. The plan was an improvement, and depicts the detail of the product and its
dimensions. This is what he would like to see on future applications, and is a good example
for the committee and sign regulations.
Jonathan said that there might be future tenants in the building, and they would need to
share in the formula for building size signage.
Miles made a comment that this back lighting might bring a new esthetic look, but would
"open a new door"for Mashpee. Is this what Mashpee wants?
2
