confidence and trust in the town itself, thus impeding the ability of the Town Officials and/or
Employees to serve the public (074-1).
Secondly, The Mashpee Message was an active media outlet during the election. Comments
made by the above noted town official were not removed on a timely basis and further
numerous negative and derogatory comments about Mr. Bono remained until the election.
Both of these had the potential of creating damage to the candidate. The website rules
focus on being kind and courteous, no promotions or Spam, and respecting everyone's privacy.
In some cases, these rules were ignored during the campaign. A potential conflict of interest
existed with a Candidate being the site administrator.
So, I believe the following actions need to be taken:
1) Mr. Collins needs to be asked to review the town officials' actions and determine if
there has been violations of the Social Media and Ethics Policy. (74-7).
2) Second the town needs to review the Social Media policy and make appropriate changes
to avoid such actions/issues in the future. Town Employees need to clearly understand
the limitations of social media usage during campaigns. Candidates for any elected
office should be provided this policy and acknowledge they understand the policy.
Let's make sure that Mashpee becomes a leader in Social Media's role in our elections and
that it serves as a positive and accurate source of information for our citizens.
Thank you very much for your time this evening.
