M'ashpee Conservation Department 16 Great Neck Road North
(508) 539-1424 Mashpee, MA 02649
What has the town done to address water quality on antuit Pond.'
Solicitation of AECOM, diagnostic study of Santuit Po
Purchasing of 6 solarbee units to address water clarity (now 7 units total)
Continued water quality testing and analysis (DNR/Board of Health
Private road takings within the watershed of Santuit Pond with improvements to stormwater infrastructure
Passage and enforcement of Nitrog,en Control bylaw to reduce fertilizer usage
Replacement of Santuit Pond fish ladder and dam/berm at southern end of pond
Replacement of outdated pipe culvert with a 4 foot wide box culvert at the Sampson's Mill Road location to
improve water flow on the santu%t. River, Which will increase the flushing raite of the pond moderately and
improve water quality in the Santuit River.
Continued enforcement/education of shipee's Chapter 172 Wetland Bylaw within jurisdictional areas
around the pond.
Formation of the Friends of Santuit Pond stewardship group (not a town affiliation, but works closely with the
town on water quality issues
Working with Maishpee wampanoag Tribe's Natural Resolurces [kept. and Army Corp of Engineers to assess
dredging feasibility(currently ongoing)
Have we missed anything?
I think the town continues to do its due diligence in assessing, tracking and monitoring the water quality of Santuit
Pond. It is understandingly frustrating for residents of the pond to see the ongoing impacts of nutrient loading and the
algae blooms/cyanobacteria that have resulted over the years. My biggest suggestion at this point is to increase public
awareness of the issues because the source of nutrient loading is coming from the pond's watershed, which extends
into parts of sandwich and Barnstable as well. This public awareness includes inspections to find failed/outdated septic
systems, potential road takings where stormwater improvements are needed. Increased enforcement of M,ashpee's
Nitro en Control Bylaw and communicating/working with the towns of sandwich and Barnstable to assess their
contributions to Santuit Pond's watershed.
""flat should we do moving forward?
Further assessments of the feasibility of dredging and/or alum treatments Corps
C'+MrM' r p f
Engineers)
Bring sandwich, and Barnstable to the table
Assessment of potential road takings within the Santuit Pond watershed (all towns)
Public education/outreach and increased warning signage re. cyanobacteria outbreaks
Restoration of the town Banding at Santuit stormwater runoff improvements)
y e wetland so it can be used as
Restoration of abandoned . acre cranbeMrr bog north of the fish ladder to native
a nutrient sink. (Conservation Crept./Army Corps funds)
Continue to work with and support the Friends of Santuit Pond stewardship group (information/education)
Summary: Santuit Pond is the shallowest pond) in Mashpee, thus"it has little to no thermocline (turnover),which limits
flushing. The pond has a large watershed which extends to areas 1 miles from the actual shoreline, Contributions of
nutrients(nitrogen and phosphorous)within this watershed are the primary cause of degrading water quality at Santuit
Pond. This issue is compounded by the limited depth of the pond (max of 9 feet in depth with an average depth of 6
feet) and limited flushing. If we can't control/reduce the nutrient contributions coming from the watershed, the
problem will continue to persist.
'revs R.
