November 26, 2019
To: Rodney Collins, Town Manager
From: Richard Fork, CN R Director
e S,antult Pond Update
c: Wayne Taylor, Assistant Town Manager
Terri Terrie Cook, Administrative Assistant
Advisories remain posted by the Mas,hpee health Department at Santuit Pond
due to the canbactaria (blue-green algae) bloom. The blooms have continued
into December in the past. As you know, the SolarBee water circulators
effectively controlled the blooms until nutrients including phosphorous in runoff
from the watershed from an extreme rein event 7" of rain) duly 7, 2017 caused
the blooms to return. The SolarBees and other in-pond treatments are not
designed to control runoff from the watershed. The blooms returned in 2018 and
2019. An additional SolarBee circulator was deployed by the SolarBee
Company July 15, 2 9at no cost to the Town to see if it would help. According
to the AECOM report can Santuit Pond, most ofthe phosphorous fueling the
bloom is coming from the sediments in the pond.
Chuc ie Green convinced the US Army tars of Engineers USCO to conduct
a feasibility study (underway now) for dredging mud out the bottom f the pond t
remove phosphorous. The USCOE, stated that severing the area is a pre-
requisite for the project is dredging to be done. Severing that area is included in
the Mashpee Comprehensive Watershed Nitrogen Management Plan. 1 have
been looking into technologies, for removing algae from the pond to eliminate the
blooms.. 1 look forward to presenting more information at the Board of
Selectmen's meeting.
