106
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
'I To the School Committee and
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
'j I submit to the citizens of Mashpee my fifth annual
report -as Superintendent of Schools. This year the Principal's
Report has been incorporated with mine.
^f` Mashpee, like all communities close to Otis Air Force
Base, has had growing pains. As of December 31, 1960, our
g° enrollment at the Samuel G. Davis School totalled 141, of
whom 61 are federally connected, an increase of 11% over
the previous June. In September, 1961, we expect to have
approximately 100 students in Grades 1-4 alone. This will
w create a shortage of at least two classrooms, and probably
r three.
The contract has been approved for our new four -class-
room and cafetorium wing, and we expect to have these new
facilities to use next fall.
During the present school year it has been necessary to
make single classes in grades 1, 2, 3, and 8. As our school
population increases, there is little doubt that within two
or three years all eight classrooms will be in use.
Mrs. Elretta Pocknett is to be commended for feeding
approximately 110 pupils per day in a cafeteria designed to
serve 60. The new kitchen facilities will make it possible for
her to serve many food items that cannot be cooked under our
present set-up.
Plans for the future indicate a need for a modified Home
Economics and Shop program for our Grade 7 and 8 girls
and boys. This could be accomplished through the use of
vacated space in our present basement. It is also hoped that
part-time art and music may be made a part of our program.
The great difficulty here seems to be in finding properly
trained faculty who will come for one day a week.
