32
Report of the Veterans' Agent
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Mashpee, Massachusetts
Dear Sirs:
The following is a report of the Department of Veterans'
Services for the calendar year 1960.
When submitting a budget for Veterans' Benefits, the
agent must of necessity anticipate, as far as possible, the
needs of a community under this program for the coming
F
year. When arriving at a recommended amount for a budget,
it is impossible to anticipate unforeseen expenditures par-
ticularly hospital and medical expenditures.
The total expenditures for Veterans' Benefits for 1960
were $3,945.19. Of this amount, 50% will be reimbursed by
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The total appropria-
tion was $5,0100.00 which left a balance of $1,054.81. There
was one reimbursement in the amount of $300.00 to partially
satisfy a lien. During the two previous years, there was a
heavy demand for hospital and medical care which resulted
in an increase of $1,000.00, for anticipated expenditures. For
the year 1961, 1 am requesting $500.00 less than in 1960 for
anticipated expenditures.
The only permanent recipients of Veterans' Benefits are
World War I veterans, widows of veterans' and parents of
veterans. As noted in previous reports, this catagory of re-
l
cipients are prone to considerable medical care. Every effort
ool
has been made to place veterans when possible in Veterans
Administration hospitals als with no cost to this community.
The employment situation, which has been critical, and
the severe winter have caused a higher rate- of Worle ar II
and Korean veterans to apply for temporary assistance.
However, this group as a whole should be commended for
their employment record.
