100
Report of Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and the
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
I am pleased to submit my seventh annual report to the
Citizens of Mashpee. As a matter of expediency, the Prin-
cipals' and Superintendent's reports are conbined into one
report.
1962 was a year of impressive gains in the instructional
program of our school. Long desired instruction, in the areas
of art supervision in all grades and manual training and
domestic science in grade five through eight, have made a
much more effective teaching program. It is the hope of the
School Committee to further strengthen the curriculum by
adding a part-time music supervisor in the Fall of 1963.
The enrollment of grades 1-8 has increased 93% in the
past five years, as indicated by the following figures:
1958 83 pupils
1959 137 "
1960 138 "
1961 148 "
1962 162 "
With this increase, the teacher -pupil load has become in-
creasingly heavy. In order to insure all pupils the optimum
opportunity of a desirable classroom -learning situation, addi-
tional teachers had to be added. In Grade 1, with thirty-
three pupils, Mrs. Lois Meyer was hired as a permanent sub-
stitute, in order to make possible a more effective teaching
situation. Together, Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Meyer have been
able to give to these young pupils the excellent type of in-
struction and meticulous attention to the needs of each in-
dividual boy and girl, which is so important at this grade
level. This would have been impossible under one teacher.
Kiri:
