38
Report of the Shellfish Constable
To the Iionorable Board of Selectmen and
the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
I hereby submit my report for the year ending December
31, 1964.
We had a very good year for scallops, in both Waquoit
and Popponesset Bays. There is also a good set in Poppones-
set Bay for next year if they are not winter killed.
We reopened the area that was closed for shellfishing
known as the Big Thatch last spring and the clamming was
very good all through the Summer and Fall. We may have to
close it again this Spring as the area is relatively small for
the large amount of fisherman.
Quahogs are not too plentiful as the drill fish are "raising
Cain" with them. I don't know of any way to get rid of them,
but will find out more about these menaces in the future.
Oysters are still very scarce, but we are hoping that they
will multiply by keeping a closed season on them.
Over 3,020 miles were travelled during the year.
Fourteen Commercial permits were issued, as well as a
number of Resident and Non -Resident Family permits.
I want to thank the fishermen and all of my deputies for
their fine assistance and cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
JOHN T.
