114
4. Many school lunch programs have been forced to
raise their prices for lunches to thirty or thirty-five
cents. This we feel, would defeat our purpose; for
more would be forced to bring a lunch from home
and be unable to profit from a hot, wholesome class
"A" lunch, so important to growing children.
In grades 4 - 6, we are continuing our non -graded read-
ing and mathematics program. As I outlined more fully in
last year's report children in these grades are grouped for
these subjects according to ability. At stated periods after
evaluation individuals are .moved to another group as the
need_ arises. We have found that because each pupil is read-
ing or doing work in arithmetic at his own achievement
level, his confidence and interest in his own progress is evi-
dent.
' Groups that need remedial work or special attention in
the mechanics of reading, or the fundamentals in arithmetic
are aided. by a remedial teacher, until the handicaps are over-
come.
This year the accelerated group are studying "modern
mathematics".
Under the guidance of Mrs. Catherine Todd, our art
supervisor, we enjoy the privilege of having one of Cape Cod's
leading .art teachers instruct our boys and girls in arts and
crafts.
Fortunate were we to obtain the services of Mrs. Thelma
Ostenfelt, our music supervisor, who replaced our beloved
Mr. James Gregg. The splendid work in music is being con -
timed and we are especially grateful to her for her outstand-
ing Christmas program.
In closing, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to
you, our School Committee, our devoted teachers, our school
nurse, our cafeteria and custodial personnel and to all with
whom I work for their continued support and cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
KENNETH COOMBS,
Principal
