115
Report of the School Nurse
To the School Committee, mr. Clayton E. Campbell,
Superintendent of Schools and the Citizens
of Mashpee:
Herewith I submit my first report as school nurse
In February, Mrs. Carol S. McLane, R.N., who had served
as Public Health and School Nurse for nearly five years, re-
signed to join the staff of the Barnstable schools. She was
much loved and it was indeed a sad school when she left.
Ear and eye examinations had been done by Mrs. Mc-
Lane. Dental clinics, provided for by the Board of Health
were started in January. Every other week, Mrs. McLane
transported six children at a time to the office of Dr. Ray-
mond Martin in Hyannis. These visits were continued through
the first week in June for a total of 13 clinics with 23 chil-
dren receiving care. Mrs. Dalzell'Dental Hygienist for Barn-
stable County Health Department completed a survey of all
Pupils. It is from her reports that children needing urgent
care are selected to go to Dr. Martin. Clinics were resumed in
December with Mrs. Stella Hicks transporting the children.
Physical examinations were done in all grades by Dr.
Mary L. Warren in March.
In conjunction with Mrs. Starkweather, Public Health
Nurse, 3 immunization clinics were held — April, May, and
June. Dr. Paul Jaques gave D.P.T. and Polio boosters to grade
one pupils: Fifth graders received D.T. boosters. Necessary
immunizations were given to pre-school children. Measles
vaccine was available to us for the first time and was given
to 22 pre-schoolers.
A severe outbreak of sore throats, respiratory infections,
and intestinal upsets during late winter and early spring,
