42
Report of the Harbor Master
To the Selectmen and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
Nice weather and absence of any major storms made it a
pleasant season for boating people.
Channel buoys and ground tackle were painted and re-
conditioned as necessary and set out in the channels. Two
new speed control signs were set up in Popponesset Bay,
These signs were made up in a substantial manner to resist
vandalism. Through the cooperation of residents on Monom-
oscoy, speed signs were placed on private docks and prop-
erties along Little and Great Rivers.
All these signs help, but it takes more than signs to
educate some of the boating public on the subjects of courtesy
and safety on the waterways. Officers from the Division of
Waterways patrolled our area a few times last summer.
A lighted beacon was installed on the easterly jetty at
the entrance to Waquoit Bay by the Town of Falmouth. This
has been a long needed aid to navigation and we are fortu-
nate that Falmouth assumed the entire cost.
We thank the many citizens who have cooperated with
us in so many ways, such as being considerate in the location
of moorings, help in recovering lost boats, reporting on chan-
nel obstructions, displaced buoys, and the like.
The services of Mr. Jerome Beatty, who serves gratis as
Assistant Harbor Master for Popponesset Bay, are most ap-
preciated.
Respectfully submitted,
GORDON CROWELL
