------------
:l
150
". Report of the School Principal
To Mr. Clayton E. Campbell, Superintendent f
of Schools, School Committee and Citizens
of the Town of Mashpee:
The annual report of the Samuel G. Davis School is
herewith submitted by the Principal.
Enrollment
Enrollment for the Samuel G. Davis School is at an all
time high with 220• pupils registered in grades K-6, October
1, 1968. The school's capacity is 225; we are rapidly ap-
proaching that figure. With an enrollment of 38 in the
kindergarten; forty four in grade one and 36 in grade two,
it was necessary to split these grades into two groups. The
arrangement allows each teacher to give her maximum time
in helping each child achieve his maximum growth in that
particular grade. It is possible, that with a large kinder-
garten enrollment in the Fall of 1969, it may be necessary
to use the facilities of the Town Library for an additional
classroom.
School Grounds Improvement
In the Fall of this year, under the supervision of one of
the Cape's outstanding landscape architects, Mr. Donald
Durell of Falmouth, the school grounds received a new and
improved appearance. In the front of the building new as-
phalt driveways, with extended parking facilities, outlined
with attractive shrubbery added beauty to the entire build-
ing. In the rear of the school, two full size tennis courts,
and a regulation size blacktopped basketball court were •con-
structed, hopefully adding an area where many of the youths
and their parents of our community will be able to enjoy the
expanded recreational facilities. A wooded area, long un-
usable was cleared of the underbrush and made useful to
the increasing number of small children who will be able
to use it as a place to play.
In the spring, we are hopeful, that funds will be avail-
able to complete this expansion and add to it a regulation
"little league" baseball diamond, so that in years to come
our young boys will have a suitable place to play. When the
k swings and slides are re-installed, this improvement will add
much to the recreational facilities sties of this community.
