63
Report of
Popponesset Bay Waterways Committee
S
Board of Selectmen
Town Hall
t
Mashpee, Massachusetts
Gentlemen:
Since our statement in the 1967 Annual Reports, Town
of Mashpee, this committee has, by several informal discus-
sions of the joint chairmen (Barnstable and Mashpee) and
with Congressman Keith, together with his staff, and with
The Army Corps of Engineers, tried to keep the dredging of
Popponesset Bay one of the important Cape projects. We
were advised that the status of the already congressionally
f approved (but not funded) Popponesset Bay Navigation Study
of $60,000.00 has not been changed and that the $6,000'.00
initial contribution to the study in the 1968 Presidential
Budget would be forthcoming. However, both chairmen have
been recently advised by The Army Corps of Engineers that
they have received funds slightly over $4,000.00 to start the
study, and that hearings will begin sometime in the not too
distant future to ascertain the feelings of the townspeople
on this matter. Advance notices of such hearings will be
made public as soon as possible.
In addition to the above-mentioned available study
i funds, a recent Washington, D.C. press release concerning
funds for Cape Cod projects included an additional $15,000.00
for the Popponesset Study. This was confirmed by Congress-
man Hastings Keith's office. Again we are thanking the
Congressman for his continuing efforts to make this one of
his most important projects.
We now feel that there will be an acceleration in this
Program and hope that those who are interested will give
serious consideration to this time-consuming effort and will
make available their feelings before and during the forth-
coming hearings.
Respectfully submitted,
HOWARD A. ROHDIN, Chairman
GORDON CROWELL
ROBERT JONES
HOWARD LORD
RALPH ROCKWELL
