118
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
I
To the School Committee and the
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
i
Regionalization
The Superintendent of Schools would be remiss if he did M
not thank Mrs. Carrie Saunders, Mrs. Hazel Oakley, and Ver
;r
non Thomas for the many, many hours they devoted to the
Regional School District Planning Board. The Town of Mash-
pee J
ee can be justly proud of their efforts.
Your Superintendent of Schools, members of the Mash-
. `k
pee School Committee, State Officials, and others believed
then and now that the answer to Mashpee's school housing
problem was and is Regionalization with Sandwich from an
educational point of view for young people and an economic
one for taxpayers. The Special Town Meeting held in Mash-
pee and Sandwich in June of 1969 demonstrated conclusively
that Regionalization between Mashpee and Sandwich was the
wish of the Mashpee voters but not the wish of the Sandwich
voters. {
With the defeat of Regionalization, it was necessary for
your Superintendent to explore other avenues to assure the
°°
young people of Mashpee Quality Education" now and in the
I`
o
M sh ee and Falmouth School
int meeting of the a
future. A g p
J
x
Superintendents was scheduled in Falmouth
Committees and Sup .
during the summer of 1969 to review the school housing prob-
lem in Mashpee. The Mashpee School Committee requestedF''
the Falmouth School Committee to accept all Mashpee chit-
:;:
dren in grades seven through twelve on a tuition basis. The
request was reviewed in detail and a verbal agreement
reached that:
1. Falmouth would continue to accept Mashpee pupils
in grades nine through twelve on a tuition basis as
has been done for the past forty years.
2. Falmouth would educate Mashpee pupils in grades
seven and eight one day in the future on a tuition
basis when needed additional classrooms were built
in the Town of Falmouth.
MEMO.—
