28 <br /> The Mashpee Historical Commission <br /> The Mashpee Historical Commission was established <br /> under the authority of Chapter 40, section 8d and approved <br /> by the Town during the Aunual Town Meeting of March 1969, <br /> This act authorized the Selectmen of Mashpee to appoint <br /> three members to the Commission for the purpose and the <br /> right and duties provided by law for preservationrom <br /> oti <br /> p on <br /> development of historical assets of the Town of Mashpee. <br /> This Commission shall conduct research foraces 1 of his- <br /> torical <br /> value <br /> p <br /> and shall seek to coordinate dinate the activities of <br /> unofficial bodies organized g for a similar purpose, <br /> and may <br /> advertiseprepare, print and distribute books, <br /> maps, charts, <br /> plans and pamphlets which it deems necessary for this work, <br /> For the purpose of protecting and preservation of such <br /> places, we the Historical Commission of Mashpee may make <br /> such recommendations to the Selectmen and to the Massa- <br /> chusetts Historical Commission, that such place be certified <br /> as a historic landmark. <br /> Said Commission may acquire in the name of the Town <br /> of Mashpee, by gift, purchase, bequest, demise, lease or <br /> otherwise; the few or lesser interest in real or personal prop- <br /> erty of significant historical value and may manage the <br /> same. <br /> It was in this capacity that the Historical Commission <br /> applied for Federal Funding of the Avant Homestead which <br /> the Commission wishes to open to the citizens and visitors <br /> as the First Wampanoag Indian Museum of Mashpee in 1970. <br /> 'I p <br /> In conjunction with the Mashpee Centennial Committee, <br /> we have worked to include other sites of a historical nature <br /> as attractions during the centennial which may continue <br /> thereafter. <br /> j The income projects initiated by the Centennial Commit- <br /> tee shall be carried on by the Historical Commission as a <br /> means of financing the sites which remain open to the pub- <br /> lic. <br /> I <br />
