59
Report of the
Popponesset Bay Waterways Committee
We are pleased to report that in 1969, official action was
initiated to study the feasibility of dredging a permanent
Popponesset Bay deep water channel 'and a harbor of refuge
which would provide access to and from Nantucket Sound at
all times.
In March, 1969 a meeting was held in Hyannis at the
request of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, and was at-
tended by Barnstable and Mashpee Selectmen, Popponesset
i
Bay Waterways Committee Co-Chairmen.and their members.
The purpose of the meeting was to establish the rules and
procedures of the U. S. Corps of Engineers for the first pub-
lic hearing, to be held in the New Seabury Cinema Theatre,
on May 21, 1969.
ii
Prior to the public hearing, the committee ques-
tionnaires
sent out
to all property owners in Mashpee and the af-
fected owners in the Barnstable areas. The results were far
beyond our expectations — 619 returns and all but 3 were in
full support of the program, placing a present value of
$1,415,500.00 on 652 boats now using Popponesset Bay and an
estimated $4,000,000.00 in boat value by 1975 is projected, not
including transients and visitors.
The Corps of Engineers have recently contacted us for
additional information, indicating that they are continuing
the study. We are anticipating more public hearings and
i
press releases. It is of the utmost importance for those who
would like to update their interest (and new or potential,
boat owners) in the event of the fulfillment of this program
to immediately contact us with details, and we will forth-
with send them to the proper authorities.
I
