99
Centennial Committee, and last summer the .celebration was
held. Its success could not have been achieved without the
tremendous help, encouragement, and time given, not only by
the citizens of Mashpee, but by those of neighboring towns.
There isn't room to name them all here, so this will serve
as a blanket note of appreciation.
The Attaquin Park Nature Center, where the principal
ceremony of the Centennial was held on July 26, 1970, was
improved specifically for the event. Young people volunteered
for the work. The Massachusetts Department of Natural
Resources has made a grant of $900 for further development
of the Nature Center. It is hoped that the wildlife exhibits
that were on display at the Mashpee Lake -can be returned
there, for the public to enjoy.
An official flag was designed for Mashpee, and unfurled
at the Centennial. Handcarved wooden signs were placed at
the highway entrances to the town, announcing to the mo-
torists that they were entering, "The Land of the WAM-
PANOAGS." A scrapbook of the Centennial events is being
prepared and will be placed on exhibit at the Mashpee Li-
brary. A sound motion picture was made of the Centennial
celebration, and will be.available to groups who wish to show
it.
Flyers and brochures were printed to announce the
Centennial. Notepaper with a Mashpee motif will be sold. It
was designed by a former resident of Mashpee, Mura Booker
Johnson. The commemorative coins, of bronze and sterling
silver, can still be .purchased. They will become valuable
collectors' items as time goes on. The History of Mashpee
is ready for distribution at this time. It contains stories and
photographs gathered from Mashpee historians and old-
timers.
The publicity given to the Mashpee Centennial was
extensive. Committee Chairman, Amelia Bingham, made an
appearance on the "Today Show", getting nationwide atten-
tion. On May 26, 1970, the day before the actual one-
hundredth anniversary of the town's incorporation, she ad-
dressed the State Legislature. Television channels 4, 6, and 7
covered the Centennial. A videotape has been prepared for
showing on the educational channel 2. Newspaper coverage
included a full-page feature story with photographs in the
New York Times Sunday, May 24. The Boston Globe Sunday
i
