116
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Committee and the
Citizens of the Town of Mashpee
School Committee
In the late fall of the 1969 school year, Mrs. Alice Hicks
notified the School Committee that she would not be a candi-
date for reelection to the Committee in March of 1970.
ii
Mrs. Hicks carried out the duties of her office for many
years with dignity and understanding. Her efforts were di-
rected at all times to that which was best for the young peo-
ple of Mashpee.
Mr. Ben Briggs, a man with an educational background
it was elected to the School Committee replacing Mrs. Hicks.
Retirement
Two dedicated teachers, namely, Mrs. Doris Blackmer
and Mrs. Ruth Sigler who gave many years of service to the
children of the Town of Mashpee applied for retirement at
the close of the 1969-70 school year. Mrs. Blackmer and Mrs.
Sigler gave of themselves far beyond the call of duty as they
dearly loved the children of Mashpee and searched for new
ways to help them in and out of the classroom. .
A "Farewell Party" was held on Sunday, June 7 to honor
the retiring teachers and the attendance was gratifying.
This was the last public affair for Mrs. Sigler as she unex-
pectedly passed away in her sleep two weeks after.
t
Vocational Education
Presently we have one student attending the Upper Cape
i
Cod Regional Vocational Technical High School in Bourne
j and five enrolled in the Barnstable Vocational High School
i on a tuition basis. They are doing very well in both schools.
It would be to the advantage of the Town of Mashpee to
r, join one of the Vocational Regional School Districts and ex-
ploratory measures .are being conducted at the present time
;; to this extent.
