si
bird seed has been provided and distributed,
from time-to-time, by your Wildlife Officer,
and this will be continued whenever it is
possible.
The children of the Samuel G. Davis School, in conjunc-
tion with their teachers and Principal Kenneth C. Coombs
prepared drawings of wildlife and were presented with certi-
ficates of achievement. As Wildlife Officer, I feel that the
children gained much in promoting their interest with these
presentations and I enjoyed the designing and preparation
of these tokens in the knowledge that they would further
their continued interest and efforts.
Many areas of our program are being neglected due to
the lack of a four-wheel-drive vehicle that is badly needed.
In many instances it is not possible to patrol all wildlife
areas in cooperation with the State Fish and Game Laws.
This situation leaves our conservation program open to many
infractions of the law that could be adequately covered with
the attainment of a vehicle that could be driven into marshy
areas. It is hoped that we will be able to correct this condi-
tion by obtaining such a vehicle at an early date. If necessary,
a good used vehicle would meet the requirements.
I also wish to thank the Board of Selectmen of the Town
of Mashpee; the Conservation Commission; Chief Bingham
of the Mashpee Police Department; the Massachusetts So-
ciety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Centerville;
and Mr. Arnold Lane of the Cape Cod Extension Service,
Barnstable, Massachusetts. In addition, Mrs. Amelia Bing-
ham and Mrs. Philip A. Rollins, both of whom have made
contributions that have aided our program. Our efforts have
also received assistance from The National Wildlife Federa-
tion of Washington, D.C. And, in closing this report, may I
recognize the residents of Mashpee, without whose continued
interest in our wildlife program our efforts would be to little
avail.
Respectfully submitted,
ELIO P. OLIVA
Wildlife Conservation Officer
Town of Mashpee
I
