i I 36 Report of the Highway Surveyor To the Honorable Board of Selectmen, Inhabitants and Taxpayers of the Town of Mashpee I, The Highway Department hereby submits the Annual report for the year 1972. Due to the heavy rains in the spring of 1972, the jDepartment had many problems with washouts and catch basins which had to be cleared twice during the spring. These heavy and - frequent rains also delayed oiling of many roads during the spring. The Highway Department now hires five full-time men. This was ample in 1970-1971, but with the growing maintenance and additional projects attached to the Department, due to the growing pains, the town is now suffering. We feel the need for additional help. With a rental grader, we were able to maintain all of our gravel roads and most of the ancient ways. Some of the ancient 1 ways have been consumed and built on by private developers of ! i which we have no control, unless these are recorded on the land court plans. ' I The plowing and sanding of private roads has been of consid- erable expense to the Department. The mileage in Snow and Ice removal has more than doubled in the past two years. Due to the inadequate facilities and building, the Department suffered great losses in deterioration and vandalism. This can only j be compensated by additional storage space and a larger building.
