40
i
Report of the Harbor Master
To the Selectmen and Citizens of Mashpee:
Buoys and ground tackle were painted and reconditioned and
set out to indicate the channels in Popponesset Bay, Little River
and Waquoit Bay.
A group of boat owners who moor their boats up in Great
River made up and set out channel markers in that river at no cost
to the Town. Cooperation like this helps to keep down the cost of
this department.
The channel leading from Waquoit Bay into Little and Great
Rivers is shoaling in more all the time. We wish the Selectmen
would press the Division of Waterways to at least make a survey.
We have renewed our understanding with the Town of Barn-
stable whereby they share the cost of buoys and signs in Poppones-
set Bay. We have also made arrangements with the operators of
the New Seabury marina to handle the buoyage of the Popponesset
Bay area. I feel sure that they will perform the job in a more
! ! efficient and satisfactory manner and save us money.
The increasing number of boats in the Popponesset Bay area
presents a problem for mooring space. In an effort to control some
I of the irresponsible placement of moorings, we now require each
mooring owner to have a permit issued by this department.
My thanks to many good citizens who help us out in some of
the difficulties that arise such as boats adrift, buoys off station and
the like.
I it
In particular, I would like to thank Mr. Edward Gargiulo who
!! serves gratis as assistant Harbor Master of Popponesset Bay, for
II' the time and effort he contributes to this department.
Respectfully submitted,
GORDON CROWELL
i
i
i
