Although we have re-
quested $18,107.00 (Eighteen thousand, one hundred and seven
dollars), the town's share contributed is more than the 50%, but the
sum of $18,107 is the total amount of money held by the federal
Government in escrow for this project. We wish to note that the
first application was made for reimbursement in November 1971
and payment was received by the Treasurer, November 1972.
This commission has requested the Board of Selectmen and
the Mashpee Conservation Commission to consider including an
article in the Annual Town Meeting Warrant, requesting the voters
to authorize these departments to apply for Open Space Grants in
order to acquire the land abutting the Avant House property. At
present the property is only one acre of land. In this way a larger
green area can be preserved and allow for an appropriate setting
for this site, as well as enhance the entrance to the Town of
Mashpee.
This year we are again appealing to the voters of this town to
vote to establish the Historic District in Mashpee. With the rapid
influx of the developers, it is without a doubt an urgent matter to
be considered by the voters, before it is too late for action.
