67 <br /> Report of the Otis Task. Force Committee <br /> To the Honorable Board of Selectmen <br /> and Citizens of the Town of Mashpee: <br /> The Otis Task Force was created by the Governor to <br /> recommend a number of approaches to the use of facilities, <br /> and land at Otis Air Force Base. <br /> The Task Force is presently conducting a study of the <br /> usage of Base Housing, as well as the possibility of locating <br /> a recreational and/or educational complex at Otis. It is also <br /> investigating other factors, i.e., economic, environmental, <br /> social, etc., that the Base closing will, and is having, in the <br /> four-town area of Mashpee, Bourne, Sandwich and Falmouth. <br /> Unfortunately, the actual legal status of the Base is <br /> still in complete flux. The situation is unique in that the <br /> majority of land comprising the Base is owned by the Com- <br /> monwealth of Massachusetts and is leased to the Department <br /> of Defense. Legal representatives of the State and Federal <br /> Governments are meeting in the hope that this lease can be <br /> re-negotiated to the safisfaction of both parties. <br /> Until agreement is reached on this lease and the exact <br /> status of various facilities and land areas of the Base is <br /> known, the Task Force can do little in making sound recom- <br /> mendations on the future use of Otis to the citizens of the <br /> four townships that comprise this Air Base. <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> ELIZABETH B.
