68 <br /> The Mashpee Historical Commission Report <br /> To the Honorable Board of Selectmen <br /> and to the Citizens of Mashpee: <br /> The year 1973 has proven to be a rewarding one for this <br /> Commission. It is gratifying to see and feel the reality of <br /> what was considered an impossible dream. <br /> During the month of February 1973, the Department of <br /> Housing and Urban Development made the final reimburse- <br /> ment payment to the Town of Mashpee. The total cost for <br /> :i completion of the Historical Preservation and Restoration <br /> project has been set at $65,000.00, including restoration of <br /> Avant House, landscaping and parking area. Final touches <br /> were put on the landscape, which has been beautifully main- <br /> ,; tained through December 1973 by The Mainstream program, <br /> without cost to this flown. <br /> In behalf of this Town, we wish to express our special <br /> thanks to Director (Mrs.) June MacDonald, her Mainstream <br /> staff and the Federation of Eastern Indian League for their <br /> interest in our community, counseling services, funding of <br /> this program and assistance to this Commission. <br /> Mainstream: This is a Federal program under the De- <br /> partment of Labor and sponsored here on Cape Cod by the <br /> Federation of Eastern Indian League which enabled our <br /> Museum to operate on a six day week plan. This agency <br /> provided us, without cost, the services of six on-the-job <br /> trainees; one (1) stenographer (as an administrative assist- <br /> ant) two (2) clerks, two (2) exhibit guides, as well as a build- <br /> ing and grounds man. A total sum of $9;516.00 (nine thou- <br /> sand five hundred and sixteen dollars) for a period of 26 <br /> weeks. One stipulation of this program is that trainees are <br /> taught and supervised in the necessary techniques relative <br /> to the project by the director for a minimum of 20 hours <br /> weekly. For this, the director received no compensation to <br /> date. Another stipulation is that the trainee be employed <br /> by the Museum upon completion of the training period. In- <br /> asmuch as this department does not have the .benefit of a <br /> funded budget, we are not in in position to employ a staff <br /> for this town owned facility. <br /> I <br />
