69 .The Massachusetts Council on Arts and Humanities ap- proved a grant to supplement staff salaries in July 1973. This grant cannot be accepted due to our non-funded status.:This would have been the first such grant to be awarded to any department in the Town of Mashpee. In spite of the lack of an operating budget, our doors opened as scheduled. We attribute our success to our many friends throughout Cape Cod; for their continuous support and contributions, which includes monies, materials, machin- ery.operated and labor as well as donated and loaned items for exhibits. The list is extremely long and we extend our sincere gratitude to each and every one that evaluated our efforts as worthy of support by helping when the need pre- sented itself. The frustrations of organizing and supervising this oper- ation without a budget has been discouraging at times. In spite of very little advertising and lack of signs direct- ing the public to the Museum, twenty thousand people have i passed through the doors of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum between the period of July 15, 1973 and the last week of October. There is no doubt our visitors appreciated and enjoyed all that we were able to exhibit. Several school field trips were scheduled and college students used the facil- ity as a resource for history and anthropology. Workshops have been conducted for graduate students, and video tapes have been made for school departments across the State. After some observation by members of the Department of Commerce and Tourism for the Commonwealth, it was the j decision of the Commissioner and his aides to absorb the cost of advertising in their annual budget. The evaluation of the Department of Commerce indicated great potential in the near future for this facility. A brochure may be released and distributed by the time of this printing. Not only is the Museum presented in this brochure, but also other attrac- tions within our Town. The Museum and Kennedy's Boston store will present jointly for two weeks during Easter an Indian Theme "Ken- nedy Salutes the Native American". By joining in this effort., we feel that it is an excellentopportunity to reeducate the people of all ages in this Commonwealth as well as enjoy. in- valuable exposure.• This spectacular shall afford the Town Of Mashpee a greater image and. prestige, There is a: in it
