75 <br /> Cape's water supply to support its- population is still un- <br /> known. The United States Geological Survey's preliminary <br /> study of "Cape Cod's Ground Water Resource" will provide <br /> the first step in obtaining this critical information. Sched- <br /> uled for completion in early 1974, the study has gathered all <br /> available information in the form of a computer model. The <br /> preliminary model will determine what additional informa- <br /> tion is needed to predict the Cape's water supply capability <br /> in supporting a given population. The final model will be <br /> able to predict what impact further development in each <br /> town will have on that area's water supply. The completion <br /> of the second phase of this study is considered crucial to <br /> sound planning for the Cape as a whole. <br /> Solid Waste Disposal <br /> Like water, solid waste disposal problems intensify with <br /> a growing population. State law prohibits burning of solid <br /> waste in Massachusetts and all 15 Cape Cod towns utilize sani- <br /> tary landfill methods to dispose of their solid waste. (Well-' <br /> fleet, however incinerates most of its solid waste.) Sanitary <br /> landfill requirements create a number of problems, particu- <br /> larly for Cape towns. The Commission has submitted recom- <br /> mendations that can help towns meet their sanitary landfill <br /> needs in the future. Most recently, the Commission has initi- <br /> ated efforts to develop methods for recycling and reclamation <br /> of solid waste on a regional basis. <br /> Seeking Adequate Housing <br /> The Cape's seasonal economy creates certain pressures <br /> on all Cape residents, but for those in need of year-round <br /> housing, these pressures may become hardship. The Com- <br /> mission's housing policy supports the state's "705" rental <br /> housing plan and the federal "235" home ownership plan <br /> for families in need. These plans subsidize the families, not <br /> the builders. In addition, the Commission provided all town <br /> officials with information on installation of utilities under- <br /> ground and the uniform building code. In recent months, a I <br /> number of Cape towns-have utilized the. Commission's staff <br /> assistance and information resources in meeting. federal <br /> Flood Insurance Requirements. j <br /> Meeting Transportation Needs <br /> i <br /> Getting around the Cape without a car is not an easy <br /> task in either winter or summer.
