In
Report of the Wildlife .Conservation Officer
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen, the Executive
Secretary, and the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee:
I take great pleasure in reporting to the Board of Select-
men and the Citizens of the Town of Mashpee, the continued
programs achieved by the Wildlife and Land Resources De-
partment in the endeavor to continue in keeping down the
continued violations of our Land Resources and wildlife.
There were many violations to our Land Resources which
have been investigated and proper action taken. The most
abuses committed were to our wildlife.
As you have probably read in the Cape Cod Standard
Times, the story of the two swans that were shot on the
Cotuit-Mashpee border and also a swan shot on the same
day at the South Cape Beach area, which had to be put out
of his misery by the Wildlife Officer.
This has been one of the many incidents. Through the
cooperation of several citizens of Mashpee, in calling to our
attention wounded wildlife, we have been able to care and
restore to good health, several ducks, canadian geese, racoons,
and many other birds and animals (mammals) which have
been nursed to health and released.
Your Wildlife and Land Resources Officer works in co-
operation with other law enforcement officers of neighbor-
Ing towns. Also, the state and federal law enforcement
officers.
Due to the many complaints of pollution to our rivers
and ponds, your Land Resources Department is at present
conducting a study of water pollution to the different
Ponds and lakes. Through the County Health Department,
we are conducting tests of water samples from the Mashpee
lakes
and ponds. A report on results is forthcoming.
I would like to take this opportunity to commend the
citizens of Monomoscoy Island, in the Town of Mashpee, for
their interest in their natural resources and wildlife, and
for their petition which action will be taken on their behalf,
by their Wildlife and Land Resources Officer, which reads as
follows:
