REPORT OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE
I
MILEAGE-POLICE VEHICLES 1975
T-1 (1974) (Odometer - 20,024) 10,084
T-2 (1975) (Reed 13 Jan 75) 75,935
T-3 (1975) (Reed 20 Jan 75) 76,030
T-4 (1975) (Reed 24 Jan 75) 72,550
T-10 ('71 amb) (Trans 30 Jun 75 to FD) 1,528
T-13 (169 105,000) (Rec'd 15 May 75 for$1.00) 10,155
246,282
Prosecutor's Report
As in other Cape Towns, Mashpee has had a definite increase in crime; and
this is not only felt directly within the Department itself, but within the court
system. The case load has become heavier within the courts and shows no sign
of decreasing. Need it be said that Mashpee made the statistics of one of the
most violent crimes that can be committed, "Murder".
Some 352 arraignments, 209 trials, 35 probable cause hearings, and 15 pre-
trial motions were handled in the court by the Mashpee Police Dept. Of the 209
trials scheduled, 173 convictions were obtained. Many of these involved multiple
offenses.
The prosecutor-attorney becomes involved in a case only if scheduled to be
tried. Many cases are disposed of upon arraignment which rarely involves the
prosecutor-attorney. Aside from occasional arraignment assistance, the
prosecutor-attorney represented the Town at hearings to determine whether or
not a complaint should issue, reviewed and responded to pre-trial motions and
assisted with warrants and technical police questions prior to arrests on
occasions. 1
It is the duty of the Police prosecutor to handle or assist in all court matters
involving the Department and assist the prosecutor-attorney in all trials. Other
matters include signing complaints, taking out all summons and subpoenas,
assisting in issuing search and arrest warrants, arraigning defendants, handling
dispositions on trial basis or at arraignments, getting continuances, attending
hearings on probable cause, making returns to the court, contacting witnesses
and attorneys concerning trials, arraignments, dispositions, continuances, etc.,
assisting the public in obtaining complaints that would be signed by those con-
cerned, responsibility for the court reports and preparation of necessary papers
and evidence for trials.
Despite the continued amendments of the General Laws and court procedures
again, the Prosecutor-Attorney has enjoyed a successful year at court and
received excellent co-operation from the Police Prosecutor and the other officers
in filing complete reports in a timely manner and being ready when their cases
are scheduled.
Allan A. Green
Prosecutor-Attorney
owi>,
79
