When this is accomplished, we hope.to [,"
create a fine front lawn and believe that such is the
desire of the townspeople.
T
School Budget `
The school budget in small towns represents the k
' major portion of the entire amount appropriated. In
towns the size of Mashpee it happens frequently that
the school budget is as much as 80% to 90% of the total
appropriation. This year the school budget is $805.00
more than the amount requested last year. In the light '
of increased costs this is small, amounting to less than
4%. The largest item in the budget is for teachers' z
salaries. This is not large because of high salaries paid
to individual teachers, for as a matter of fact the salaries ;
II paid in Mashpee are by far the lowest on Cape Cod. It
is a minimum amount necessary to bring to Mashpee
trained teachers. In connection with teachers' salaries
it is well to keep in mind that the town of Mashpee re
ceives from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under
a formula based on teaching service approximately
$2,800.00 (Chap. 70).
The next large expenditure is for tuition of high
school students. The more students we have in high
school the more it costs and the better it is for Mashpee
- —for today any youngster without a high school
educ
a
tion finds it difficult to secure employment.
The next large expenditure is for transportation. All
but$300.00 of this expenditure is reimbursed by the state.
gOther items in the budget have been kept as low as
possible.
l
